Trump pledges US-Iran talks on sanctions

Published on: April 8, 2026 7:19 PM

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said the United States will work closely with Iran, focusing on tariff and sanctions relief. The announcement follows a two-week ceasefire that paused US-Israel strikes against Tehran. Trump confirmed partial agreement on 15 points of the US plan but did not provide full details of the deal.

Trump emphasized that countries supplying weapons to Iran would face a 50% tariff on exports to the US. He noted that Russia and China had helped Iran build military capabilities, including missiles and air-defense systems, but restrained support during recent attacks. The ceasefire allowed a temporary pause in hostilities at Pakistan’s request.

In a social media post, Trump praised Iran’s leadership, describing the recent leadership change as a “very productive Regime Change.” He added that no uranium enrichment has occurred since the attacks and that the US will work with Iran to secure nuclear materials and prevent further escalation.

Despite the ceasefire and talks on sanctions, key disagreements between Washington and Tehran remain unresolved. Both sides continue to maintain competing demands for a long-term peace arrangement, with Iran retaining its stockpile of near-weapons-grade uranium and missile capabilities. Analysts caution that negotiations may remain delicate and complex.

Trump’s statement comes amid global relief on financial markets and a cautious optimism on Iran’s streets. While the ceasefire reduces immediate conflict, experts warn that regional tensions persist, and ongoing diplomacy will be critical in preventing a resumption of hostilities.
