Published on: March 30, 2026 12:32 AM

In a historic first, the world witnessed a unique cultural and sporting event as Malakhra and Sumo wrestling came face-to-face during the 1st Pakistan-Osaka Cultural Festival 2026 held in Osaka city of Japan.

The landmark event brought together two ancient wrestling traditions-Malakhra from Sindh, Pakistan, and Sumo from Japan-serving as a powerful symbol of cultural exchange, friendship, and sportsmanship between the two countries.

According to press release issued here on Saturday, the initiative received strong support from Mohammad Azmat Shigeyuki Ataka, First Vice-President of the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association, Sindh. The event was organized under the leadership of Syed Ali Johar Zaidi, President of the Pakistan Association Sakai, Osaka, and organizer of the cultural festival, along with his team and the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association.

The Malakhra vs Sumo competition offered a unique experience for spectators, with wrestlers from both sides displaying remarkable sportsmanship, respect, and adherence to traditional values. The friendly matches were widely appreciated by the audience, highlighting the richness of both cultures.

Pakistani Malakhra wrestlers delivered notable performances, with Manthar Bugti demonstrating exceptional strength and technique, while Qurban Ali Hotipoto showcased determination and skill. The team, led by coach and referee Muharram Ali Majeedano, represented Pakistan with dedication and professionalism.

The event also underscored the importance of preserving traditional sports like Malakhra, emphasizing the need for support from governments and cultural institutions to promote such heritage at both national and international levels.

The historic encounter is expected to leave a lasting impact as a symbol of cultural unity and sporting collaboration between Pakistan and Japan.
