Rescue teams responded after receiving reports of a distressed vessel in the area. The survivors were brought to safety and provided with immediate assistance, including medical care and food.
According to statements given by those rescued, the group had been stranded at sea for six days before help arrived. They said the small inflatable boat had been drifting without sufficient supplies, leaving passengers exposed to harsh weather and dangerous conditions.
The survivors also told officials that the bodies of the deceased migrants had been thrown into the sea during the ordeal. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities or nationalities of the victims.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in search of better opportunities in Europe. Overcrowded and poorly equipped boats continue to be used for such journeys, often resulting in tragic outcomes.
Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, while humanitarian organisations have once again called for stronger measures to ensure safe migration routes and prevent further loss of life.
