Iran missile and drone strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia

Published on: March 28, 2026 12:14 PM

Iranian missile and drone strikes hit Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia today, damaging several U.S. refueling aircraft : r/Military

At least 12 American soldiers were wounded, two seriously, following an Iran missile and drone strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, US media reported on Friday. The attack is part of Tehran’s ongoing retaliatory campaign against Gulf nations it accuses of supporting US strikes, which began in coordination with Israel on February 28.

According to reports, the soldiers were inside a building at the base when the attack occurred. Several aerial refueling aircraft also suffered damage. Saudi air defenses have previously intercepted multiple missiles fired near the base, mitigating the scale of previous strikes.

Since the outbreak of the conflict, 13 US military service members have been killed—seven in the Gulf and six in Iraq—and more than 300 others have been wounded. While Iran has not released an official casualty toll, a US-based activist group reported that around 1,167 Iranian troops had been killed, with the status of 658 remaining unknown. AFP could not independently verify these figures due to strict reporting restrictions in Iran.

The strike on Prince Sultan follows a previous incident in early March, when the Central Intelligence Agency’s station at the US Embassy in Riyadh was hit by suspected Iranian drones. The attack caused limited fire and material damage but no casualties. The embassy is among several US installations targeted amid the escalating conflict.

The Pentagon and US Central Command have not immediately commented on the latest strike. The attacks highlight the growing risks to US forces and assets in the region as tensions between Tehran, Washington, and allied Gulf nations continue to escalate. Analysts warn that continued Iranian retaliatory measures could further disrupt military operations and heighten instability across the Gulf.
