PM urges immediate de-escalation in call with MBS

ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday, calling for an “immediate end to hostilities and return to normalcy” amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz condemned the recent attacks on Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed Pakistan’s complete solidarity and support for the Kingdom and its people during these challenging times. He praised Saudi leadership for exercising restraint and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to stand by the Kingdom, just as Saudi Arabia has supported Pakistan over the years.

The premier urged unity and harmony within the ranks of the Ummah and briefed the Crown Prince on Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach aimed at de-escalation and resolving differences through dialogue. The Saudi leadership expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s peace efforts, with both sides agreeing to maintain close coordination at all levels.

Separately, PM Shehbaz posted on X (formerly Twitter) offering Eid ul Fitr greetings to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the royal family, and the Saudi people. He highlighted the urgent need for an end to hostilities, de-escalation, and unity among Muslim nations.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28 and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes on U.S. bases across the Gulf, including Saudi territory. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia last year signed the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, under which an attack on either country is considered aggression against both.

Earlier, PM Shehbaz offered to host talks between the U.S. and Iran to facilitate a comprehensive settlement of the conflict. Reports indicate that Islamabad, in coordination with Turkey and Egypt, has been actively involved in back-channel diplomacy to prevent further escalation and promote regional stability.
