Karachi battered by heavy rain and strong winds

Published on: March 19, 2026 12:14 AM

Karachi: Heavy rain and strong winds lashed parts of Karachi on Wednesday, disrupting traffic and daily life across the city. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had forecast rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and isolated hailstorms for Karachi and other Sindh districts. Residents faced waterlogging, fallen trees, and interruptions in routine activities due to the severe weather.

Intermittent showers accompanied by gusty winds affected multiple areas, with some locations experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall. The PMD issued warnings for Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tharparker, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, and Karachi divisions. The system is influenced by a westerly wave entering western parts of the country.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert and deploy machinery to handle emergencies. He emphasized preparedness to address fallen trees, waterlogging, and other hazards caused by strong winds and heavy rain.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) received multiple reports of trees and branches falling in residential and commercial areas. Staff have been mobilized across the city to clear debris, restore traffic flow, and ensure public safety during the ongoing weather system.

Authorities urged citizens to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety guidelines amid continued rain and strong winds. The PMD forecast similar weather conditions for Thursday, warning residents of further heavy rainfall and gusty winds across Sindh.
