Roblox introduces AI-powered chat rephrasing to curb offensive language

Published on: March 6, 2026 1:59 PM

Roblox has announced a new real-time, AI-powered chat rephrasing feature designed to automatically replace offensive language with more appropriate alternatives. The company unveiled the feature on Thursday, highlighting it as a major upgrade to its existing text filter system.

Previously, Roblox’s chat filter would block banned words by replacing them with strings of “####” symbols. While effective, this approach often disrupted conversations and made messages hard to follow. The new system goes a step further by rephrasing messages into respectful language while keeping the intent of the original text intact. For example, a message like “Hurry TF up!” would now appear as “Hurry up!” to all participants in the chat, and the system notifies users when a rephrasing occurs.

“Chat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox,” said Rajiv Bhatia, Roblox’s vice president of User and Discovery Product. He added that real-time rephrasing helps maintain civility without disrupting gameplay. The system still monitors and addresses serious misconduct while improving the flow of normal conversation.

The feature supports all languages currently available through Roblox’s auto-translation tools. Roblox is also upgrading its text-filtering system to detect more variations of banned words, including leetspeak and other sophisticated attempts to bypass filters. Early tests show the improvements have reduced false negatives for sharing or soliciting personal information by a factor of 20.

The announcement follows Roblox’s introduction of compulsory facial verification for chat access, part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance child safety. The verification system and upgraded chat filters come amid lawsuits filed by the attorneys general of Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana, which alleged that Roblox exposed young users to explicit content and grooming risks.

Roblox says the new AI-driven feature aims to make chats safer and more user-friendly while preserving the platform’s interactive experience for millions of players worldwide.
