Saudi Arabia guarantees alternative oil route for Pakistan amid strait closure

Published on: March 4, 2026 4:36 PM

Saudi Arabia has assured Pakistan of continued oil supplies through an alternative route following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz after the United States-Israel attack on Iran. Officials in Islamabad said the arrangement is part of ongoing efforts to secure Pakistan’s energy imports during regional disruptions. The move underscores strong bilateral cooperation between the two countries in managing critical energy needs. Saudi authorities confirmed that timely shipments would ensure minimal impact on Pakistan’s energy security.

The assurance came during a meeting between Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malki in Islamabad. Pakistan requested using Yanbu Port on the Red Sea as an alternative route to receive crude oil shipments. Saudi Arabia agreed to fully support this plan and facilitate smooth logistical arrangements for transporting petroleum to Pakistan. Officials confirmed that a Pakistani vessel would be dispatched to Yanbu to load crude oil cargo directly.

Ali Pervaiz Malik expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s cooperation and emphasized the importance of uninterrupted energy supplies for Pakistan’s domestic needs. He highlighted government efforts to maintain stable petroleum distribution and stressed that priority shipments from Yanbu would help mitigate any shortages. The minister added that alternative arrangements are crucial in light of regional tensions affecting traditional supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Ambassador Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malki reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to stand by Pakistan in times of need, assuring continued support during emergencies. He emphasized that the cooperation reflects longstanding strategic ties and mutual trust between both nations. Officials highlighted that the Red Sea route provides a reliable alternative to avoid disruptions caused by regional conflicts or blockades.

Most of Pakistan’s petroleum imports typically pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making the alternative Yanbu route especially significant under current circumstances. Energy experts noted that diversifying supply routes strengthens Pakistan’s energy resilience and reduces reliance on volatile transit points. The assurance from Saudi Arabia ensures Pakistan can maintain operational energy reserves and meet growing domestic demand without interruption.
