Pakistan raises flag on five Afghan border posts amid escalation

Published on: February 27, 2026 1:29 PM

Pakistan Army has reportedly taken control of five additional Afghan border posts in Afghanistan’s Paktia province and raised the national flag, further intensifying tensions along the volatile frontier. Officials said the move followed what they described as unprovoked aggression from Afghan Taliban forces. The newly secured posts lie opposite South Waziristan, a region that has witnessed repeated cross-border incidents in recent months. This latest development signals a significant shift in the security landscape along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

According to security sources, two of the captured posts are located opposite Shawal, two stand across from Angoor Adda, and one faces Zarmalan, all strategically sensitive points. These areas serve as critical transit corridors and have long remained vulnerable to militant movement and border disputes. By securing these positions, Pakistani forces aim to strengthen border management and reduce infiltration risks. Moreover, officials believe the operation has altered ground realities in favor of Pakistan’s defensive posture.

During the operation, Pakistani troops also destroyed the Afghan terminal at Angoor Adda, describing it as a necessary step to neutralize hostile infrastructure. Security officials claimed Afghan Taliban fighters suffered heavy losses due to what they termed a strong and effective military response. They emphasized that Pakistani forces acted with precision and maintained control throughout the engagement. However, no independent confirmation of casualties has yet emerged from Afghan authorities.

Meanwhile, authorities have not released a detailed official statement outlining the full scope of the action, though sources indicate that operations remain ongoing in surrounding areas. The border region has experienced rising friction in recent weeks, increasing concerns about broader instability. Security analysts warn that sustained escalation could complicate diplomatic ties between Islamabad and Kabul. Nevertheless, Pakistan maintains that it acted strictly to safeguard its territorial integrity and national security interests.

Security sources further noted that troops remain on high alert as reinforcement and surveillance efforts continue along the frontier. The evolving situation underscores the fragile nature of relations between the two neighboring countries. Observers believe that sustained dialogue may be essential to prevent further clashes. For now, the raised flags over the newly captured posts stand as a visible marker of a rapidly unfolding border crisis.
