Kim Jong Un unveils homes for fallen soldiers’ families

Published on: February 16, 2026 10:50 PM

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inaugurated a new housing district in Pyongyang for families of soldiers killed while deployed to aid Russia in the Ukraine war, state media reported Monday. The project, located on Saeppyol Street, is described as a lasting tribute to the fallen soldiers and their sacrifices abroad.

At the ceremony on Sunday, Kim praised the deceased troops and emphasized that the housing was built “thanks to the ardent desire of our motherland that wishes that the precious lives of its excellent sons … will live forever,” according to Korean Central News Agency. He vowed continued state support to ensure families lead “proud and worthwhile” lives.

After cutting a ribbon, Kim toured several apartments and met relatives of the fallen. Housing licenses were officially presented in the name of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, accompanied by a fireworks display. His daughter, Kim Ju Ae, was also present, signaling her increasing public role.

North Korea has sent approximately 15,000 troops to assist Russian forces in the Kursk region since 2022, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), with roughly 2,000 soldiers reported killed. Analysts suggest the housing project aims to legitimize overseas deployments and bolster domestic support by emphasizing sacrifice and loyalty.

The inauguration comes ahead of North Korea’s 9th Congress of the Workers’ Party later this month, where Kim is expected to outline domestic and foreign policy priorities. The event is part of a series of public displays highlighting state achievements and reinforcing Kim’s authority at home.
