Bangladesh invites Shehbaz, Modi to Tarique Rahman oath ceremony

Published on: February 15, 2026 12:59 PM

Bangladesh’s incoming administration is preparing an oath-taking ceremony that could bring together key regional leaders, including Shehbaz Sharif and Narendra Modi. The swearing-in of Tarique Rahman is scheduled for February 17 in Dhaka, marking a significant political transition following decisive election results. The move signals a renewed diplomatic outreach toward South Asia.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured more than two-thirds of parliamentary seats in the 13th national elections, enabling it to form a strong majority government. After achieving a clear mandate, party leaders formally initiated the constitutional process to establish the new administration. The caretaker government is overseeing arrangements for the official ceremony.

Preparations are underway to invite heads of government from member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, along with leaders from Middle Eastern countries. Party officials say the invitations aim to highlight Bangladesh’s diplomatic priorities and reinforce regional cooperation. The participation of prominent foreign dignitaries would underscore the new government’s outward-looking foreign policy approach.

Moreover, senior BNP leaders indicated that the event will not target any specific country but will broadly engage regional partners. By extending invitations across South Asia and the Middle East, the party intends to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic collaboration. Analysts view the inclusive guest list as a strategic diplomatic gesture.

In his first media interaction after the electoral victory, Tarique Rahman emphasized economic recovery, improved law and order, and good governance as top priorities. He stated that after nearly two decades, his party’s return to power carries a responsibility to stabilize institutions and restore investor confidence. Therefore, the oath-taking ceremony is expected to reflect both political renewal and diplomatic ambition.
