Pakistan and India gear up for high-stakes T20 World Cup clash

Published on: February 14, 2026 4:45 PM

COLOMBO – Pakistan and India are set to face off in the T20 World Cup on Sunday in Colombo, with tensions heightened after a tumultuous fortnight that nearly saw Pakistan boycott the match.

The fixture, long considered the marquee clash of the tournament, was at risk after Pakistan threatened to pull out in solidarity with Bangladesh, which had refused to tour India over safety concerns.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) intervened to broker a compromise, salvaging the high-profile contest and averting a potential financial and diplomatic setback for broadcasters and sponsors. Despite the political undercurrents, the focus now shifts to cricket, where India has historically dominated. The defending champions boast a 7-1 record against Pakistan in T20 World Cups, including three wins in last year’s Asia Cup in the UAE, highlighted by a tense final with provocative gestures and unsportsmanlike exchanges.

Former India captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the unpredictability of the fixture, stating, “It’s such a funny game. You can’t just go and think that it’s a two-point victory for us. You just have to play good cricket on that particular day.”

India enters the match with a strong lineup, led by opener Abhishek Sharma and spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who currently top the batting and bowling rankings, respectively. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav has regained form, Ishan Kishan anchors the top order, and Rinku Singh has settled into a finishing role. The spin and pace attack, led by Chakravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah, along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya, provides India a competitive edge.

Pakistan, meanwhile, will rely on opener Sahibzada Farhan, captain Salman Agha, and spin-bowling all-rounder Saim Ayub. Off-spinner Usman Tariq, known for his slinging side-arm action, could prove to be the X-factor for the team. With both teams unbeaten in their opening matches, Sunday’s showdown promises a thrilling encounter at the intersection of cricketing skill, history, and regional rivalry.
