
Zimbabwe created a major upset in the T20 World Cup after defeating former champions Australia by 23 runs in a thrilling group match in Colombo, showing confidence, discipline, and strong teamwork throughout the contest. Moreover, this victory stands as one of Zimbabwe’s most memorable performances in recent years, as they outplayed a much stronger side in all key areas of the game.
Batting first, Zimbabwe posted a competitive total of 169 runs, with opener Brian Bennett playing a calm and responsible innings, remaining unbeaten on 64 from 56 balls, supported by seven well-timed boundaries. Meanwhile, Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ryan Burl both added 35 runs each, while captain Sikandar Raza finished strongly with an unbeaten 25 to stabilize the innings.

Although the Australian bowlers tried to control the run flow, Zimbabwe remained patient and avoided unnecessary risks, hitting only one six but keeping the scoreboard moving through smart singles and boundaries. Additionally, Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green managed to take two wickets each, but they failed to stop Zimbabwe from reaching a challenging total.
In response, Australia struggled under pressure and were bowled out for 146 runs in the final over, despite Matt Renshaw scoring an impressive 65 and Glenn Maxwell contributing 31. However, Zimbabwe’s bowling attack stayed consistent, with Blessing Muzarabani leading the charge by claiming four crucial wickets at key moments.
