
ISLAMABAD: Former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa fainted after experiencing a heart block caused by an issue in his heart’s electrical system, a family source confirmed, clarifying reports that he had simply slipped. The incident led to a head injury, and he is currently under medical care at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

According to the source, Gen Bajwa had felt unwell on the evening of February 9 but went for his usual walk and exercise. Later, he experienced nausea and fainted after vomiting in the washroom, resulting in a fall. “There were three hairline fractures in his skull, but fortunately no blood clots in the brain,” the source said, emphasizing that he is receiving proper treatment and is fully conscious.

Doctors diagnosed a Third-Degree Atrioventricular (AV) Block as the cause of the fainting. He is being treated with a temporary pacemaker, and plans are in place to install a permanent pacemaker to address the heart condition. The source reassured the public that surgery is not required at this stage, and Gen Bajwa is being kept sedated to aid recovery.
The family appealed to the public to avoid spreading false information on social media and to respect the former army chief’s privacy during this period.

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) had earlier confirmed that Gen Bajwa was admitted to CMH following a fall at his residence. Gen Bajwa served as Pakistan’s army chief from 2016 until his retirement on November 29, 2022, and continues to be closely monitored by medical professionals.
