WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled a government-backed online platform, TrumpRx.gov, designed to allow Americans to search for prescription medications and buy them directly from manufacturers or pharmacies. The announcement was made at an event in the Eisenhower Office Building, adjacent to the White House.

Trump emphasized that the platform would help Americans save money while ensuring access to essential medications. “We are going to save a lot of money and be healthy,” he said, highlighting the administration’s efforts to reduce drug prices and promote domestic production.

The website itself does not sell medications. Instead, it acts as a search portal, connecting consumers to manufacturers’ websites or participating pharmacies where the drugs can be purchased. Trump claimed that the portal would deliver “the lowest prescription prices in the world for Americans.”
The launch comes after the administration reached agreements with major pharmaceutical companies to lower the cost of certain drugs and incentivize manufacturing in the U.S. Trump also warned that tariffs could be imposed on drugs manufactured abroad.
TrumpRx currently lists 43 medications, including widely used treatments such as insulin, Humira, and Cytomel. A notable aspect of the platform is that it does not accept insurance; patients pay out of pocket or are redirected to manufacturer sites that may offer insurance coverage. Critics have warned that despite claims of savings, many consumers might pay more than through conventional pharmacy or insurance channels, as most listed drugs are already covered by health insurance. According to a 2024 CDC survey, nearly 85 percent of Americans already have coverage for prescription medications.

Officials say the initiative is part of a broader push to increase transparency in drug pricing, reduce reliance on foreign pharmaceutical production, and provide more options for patients seeking affordable medications.
The government plans to expand the platform over time, adding more drugs and features to help consumers compare prices and locate supplies efficiently.
