Shireen Mazari approaches IHC to meet imprisoned daughter, son-in-law

Shireen Mazari says Islamabad police 'surrounded' her house, enquired about daughter Imaan and son-in-law Hadi - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD, February 3, 2026 — Former federal minister Shireen Mazari on Tuesday filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), seeking urgent intervention to allow her to meet her daughter, human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir, and son-in-law Hadi Ali Chatha, both currently held in Adiala Jail.

Imaan and Hadi were sentenced on January 24, 2026, to a combined 17 years in prison over charges related to controversial social media posts. Mazari, through a team of prominent lawyers including Kamran Murtaza, Raja Aleem Abbasi, Chaudhry Hafeezullah Yaqub, Zafar Khokhar, and others, alleged that jail authorities had cut off all contact between the detainees and their family and legal counsel, without any written order or lawful justification.

Its 10 days & I have no proof of life even of my daughter @ImaanZHazir & son in law @AdvHadiali. Denying access violates basic rights of prisoners. Those doing this, esp mothers, shd imagine being without proof of life of their kids for 10 days after a violent illegal arrest!

The petition argues that the denial of visitation and confidential access to lawyers amounts to “incommunicado detention,” violating constitutional guarantees under Articles 4, 9, 10-A, and 14, which ensure due process, fair trial, and humane treatment. The plea also cites the Punjab Prison Rules, 1978, and international standards such as the UN Nelson Mandela Rules, asserting the state’s duty of care toward detainees.

Mazari has requested the IHC issue interim relief allowing temporary family visits and legal consultations pending the final hearing. The respondents include the Federation of Pakistan, the Islamabad police inspector general, and the superintendent of Adiala Jail. A hearing date has not yet been fixed.

The case against the couple stems from a complaint filed on August 12, 2025, at the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in Islamabad, accusing Imaan of disseminating content “aligned with hostile terrorist groups and proscribed organizations,” while Hadi was implicated for sharing her posts. Previous interim bail for the couple had been cancelled after repeated court non-appearances.
