Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Advocate General of Punjab to meet with the Chief Minister and Senior Minister regarding rampant tree felling. Justice Shahid Karim emphasized the environmental and long-term impact, asking, “Do you realize how many years it takes for a single tree to grow?”
The court criticized the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), noting that anyone can obtain an NOC to cut trees. Justice Karim asked, “Is PHA’s job only to build Padel courts and restaurants in public parks?” Officials were warned that people currently act without fear of accountability.

Advocate General Punjab, Amjad Parvez, acknowledged poor coordination between departments. The court stressed that strict instructions must be issued: no tree or branch should be cut without government permission. It suggested adopting laws similar to Europe, where even private plants are protected.
Regarding projects in Texali and Sheranwala, Parvez said trees would remain untouched for 45 and 15 days, respectively. The court noted that no formal relocation policy exists and recommended hiring independent experts to draft one. It warned that projects may need redesigning to protect mature trees.
