A trailer was initially involved in an accident, blocking the motorway and triggering a pile-up as several vehicles collided while travelling from Islamabad to Peshawar. One person died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital, officials said.
Rescue teams and motorway police quickly arrived at the site, carrying out emergency operations and clearing the wreckage. Traffic on the vital artery was temporarily disrupted but later restored.
The injured were shifted to Bacha Khan Teaching Hospital, where five were reported to be in critical condition. Hospital spokesperson Rahan Yousafzai confirmed the fatalities and said all emergency staff were placed on high alert to provide immediate care.
Road accidents remain a frequent hazard on Pakistani highways, often caused by overspeeding, unsafe overtaking, and violation of traffic rules. Earlier this month, two separate accidents in Punjab and Balochistan killed at least 24 people and injured more than 20.
