WhatsApp adds ‘thinking mode’ to Meta AI for more reasoned answers

Published on: January 26, 2026 2:30 PM

WhatsApp's new feature, Ask Meta AI, allows instant answers

Meta’s messaging platform WhatsApp is preparing to upgrade its built-in AI assistant with a new “thinking mode” aimed at delivering more structured and reasoned answers, according to a beta update for Android via the Google Play Beta programme.

The new feature, still in development, is designed for scenarios where accuracy, context, and depth are more important than speed. Unlike the default “fast mode,” which provides brief responses with minimal delay, thinking mode allows Meta AI to take additional time to analyse prompts and generate detailed, context-aware answers.

Developers exploring the latest beta version have identified references to two distinct interaction modes: fast and thinking. Users are expected to toggle between the modes within the chat interface, with a thunderbolt icon representing fast mode and a lightbulb icon signifying thinking mode.

Meta AI, WhatsApp’s in-app assistant, was originally designed to respond to general queries and assist with everyday tasks. While its current capabilities have been limited compared to other AI assistants, the introduction of thinking mode signals the company’s ambition to enhance the AI’s reasoning and make it a more competitive digital assistant.

The move aligns with broader trends in AI development, where platforms are increasingly offering options to balance speed with thoughtful, in-depth responses. Analysts say this could make WhatsApp’s AI more useful for complex queries, research-oriented tasks, and decision-making support.

Although there is no official release date yet, the beta references indicate that Meta is laying the groundwork for a significant update that could transform WhatsApp from a messaging app with a simple AI helper into a more capable and nuanced digital assistant.
