KARACHI: The death toll from the fire at Karachi’s Gul Plaza shopping mall rose to 14 on Monday as eight more bodies were recovered. Flames continue to emerge from smouldering debris, prompting renewed firefighting efforts from the Rimpa Plaza side, according to Rescue 1122 Chief Operating Officer Dr Abid Jalal.

The fire, which erupted on Saturday night on M.A. Jinnah Road, was doused after more than 24 hours. Officials initially suspected an electrical short circuit, though the cause has yet to be confirmed. South DIG Syed Asad Raza said a total of eight bodies had been recovered since Sunday night, while Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed confirmed that five bodies were brought to Civil Hospital Karachi.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori called the incident a “national tragedy,” noting that over 70 people remain missing. He highlighted reports of a pregnant woman trapped inside the building as particularly concerning. The governor assured that the authorities would support affected traders until their losses were fully compensated and announced a helpline for families of the missing.

Heartbroken by the tragic fire at Gul Plaza in Karachi. My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones, the injured, and all those waiting for news as rescue teams continue their efforts. May strength be with the community at this time.

Traffic along M.A. Jinnah Road, from Tibet Centre to Garden Chowk, remains closed as rescue and recovery operations continue. Karachi Traffic Police provided alternate routes for commuters to manage the disruption.

International representatives expressed condolences. The United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Pakistan said she was “heartbroken” by the tragedy, while the German Consulate in Karachi conveyed thoughts and prayers to victims and their families.

Residents and shopkeepers criticised the delayed response, limited resources, and lack of coordination, saying timely action could have prevented the fire from spreading so extensively. Local sources also highlighted water shortages and the narrow condition of M.A. Jinnah Road as obstacles that hindered firefighting operations.
