Afghanistan rocked as star bowler misses T20 World Cup

Published on: January 16, 2026 10:30 PM

Afghanistan’s cricket team has suffered a major setback as fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq is ruled out of the T20 World Cup. He will also miss next week’s three-match T20 series against the West Indies. The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed that Naveen-ul-Haq will undergo surgery at the end of January.

The board has not yet named a permanent replacement for him. However, reserve players for the World Cup include spinner A M Ghazanfar, all-rounder Ijaz Ahmadzai, and fast bowler Zia-ur-Rehman Sharifi. Officials are monitoring the situation closely to ensure the team remains competitive in the upcoming tournament.

The exact nature of Naveen-ul-Haq’s injury has not been disclosed. This comes as a huge blow because he is a key part of Afghanistan’s fast bowling attack. Experts say the team will need to adjust strategies quickly to cover his absence.

The ICC T20 World Cup will begin on February 7 in India. Afghanistan has been placed in Group D, where it faces challenging competition in the initial matches. Analysts believe that losing a main bowler could affect the team’s performance in crucial games.

Despite the setback, Afghanistan aims to remain focused and adapt to the circumstances. The team management hopes reserve players can fill the gap effectively. Fans are watching closely as preparations continue for the mega cricket event.
