Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 review — a visual and tactical masterpiece

Published on: January 16, 2026 1:03 PM

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive, is a standout title that recently swept nine awards at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year. The game impresses with its striking visuals, atmospheric soundtrack, and tactical turn-based combat, making it a must-play for fans of story-driven adventures.

Set in a fractured world called Lumiere, the game follows an expedition of characters aged 33 and younger, tasked with defeating a mysterious entity known as the Paintress, who erases people every year in an event called the gommage. The narrative is compelling, full of twists and moments that evoke both laughter and shock, brought to life by stellar voice acting that gives each character depth and emotion.

The game’s art style is a unique mix of fantasy and French architecture, with iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe distorted or floating amid surreal landscapes. Character models are detailed, with realistic fabrics and hair, and the enemy designs complement the diverse environments. The soundtrack, ranging from ambient tracks to grand orchestral pieces, enhances immersion, though occasional abrupt changes in music can be jarring.

Combat in Clair Obscur is turn-based but engaging, with mechanics such as dodges, parries, and counterattacks adding strategic depth. Each character has unique abilities that can be combined for powerful team attacks. While some battles can be punishing and levels easy to get lost in, the system rewards careful planning and experimentation.

Overall, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 delivers a polished, immersive experience that justifies its accolades. Its combination of visual flair, tactical gameplay, and compelling storytelling makes it a standout title on both PlayStation 5 and PC.
