A Unit established under the Investigation Wing, formulated to control sexual crimes against women and children across Punjab, has been declared below par performance. The Investigation Wing has not been able to arrest the accused in many cases. Around 14,000 cases of rape of women and children have been registered across Punjab, including Lahore.
According to details provided to Daily Times, due to the ineffectiveness and poor investigation of the Investigation Wing, cases of sexual assault could not be prevented. It has been decided to give powers to the CCD to investigate sexual crimes in Punjab.
A survey for the Special Sexual Offences Investigation Units has been conducted in the Crime Control Department. Last year, 13,820 cases of rape of women and children were registered across the province, including Lahore. The highest number, 1,576, of rapes cases, was registered in Lahore only.
Sources further informed that Special Units will be established in the CCD for the speedy and effective investigation of sexual crime cases. Specially trained officers will now investigate sexual crimes. Preparations have been made to strengthen the Crime Control Department.
Moreover, a new system will be introduced soon to end delays in sexual crime cases.
