KARACHI: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has said it is actively working to resolve a technical fault that caused a 30 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) shortfall in gas supply across Sindh and Balochistan. Officials expect the deficit to be fully recovered in the coming days, which should ease pressure and restore normal household services.

The utility said an unexpected cold snap triggered a surge in natural gas demand as households increased the use of geysers and space heaters. Overall consumption reportedly rose by about 10 percent, prompting SSGC to divert approximately 90 MMCFD of reliquefied natural gas into the network to meet residential needs.
However, recent rapid temperature drops further escalated demand, particularly during morning and evening peaks. Compounding the situation, an upstream technical issue reduced supply by 30 MMCFD, lowering distribution pressure in several tail-end localities and prompting emergency measures.
SSGC said it implemented its government-approved load management plan to prioritize domestic consumers. Measures included curtailing gas to fertiliser plants and enforcing weekly industrial closures. The company emphasized that residential supply remains the top priority, in line with directives from the prime minister.
The spokesperson added that SSGC teams are operating round the clock to resolve low-pressure complaints and ensure uninterrupted domestic service from 5am to 10pm daily. She said technical teams are monitoring the network closely to restore full service as quickly as possible.

SSGC reassured consumers that once the technical fault is addressed and gas supply stabilizes, normal pressure would be restored to households across all affected regions, mitigating the impact of the winter surge on residents.
