Intel has announced plans to develop a dedicated handheld gaming platform powered by its upcoming Panther Lake processors, aiming to expand its footprint in the fast-growing portable gaming segment. The announcement came during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas.
The new platform will combine both hardware and software, according to Intel officials. It is designed specifically to support handheld gaming devices, signalling the company’s intent to compete more directly in a market currently dominated by rivals.

Speaking at CES, Daniel Rogers, Intel’s vice president and general manager of PC products, said the platform will be built around Intel Core Series 3 processors, codenamed Panther Lake. These chips were introduced last year and are now being integrated into a wider range of personal computers.
Reports indicate that Intel is developing a dedicated chip optimised for handheld gaming use cases. Panther Lake processors will be the first Intel chips manufactured using the company’s advanced 18A process, which entered production in 2025.
Intel has a long history in gaming, having supplied processors for gaming PCs since the 1990s. The company strengthened its gaming focus in 2022 with the launch of Intel Arc graphics processing units, targeting high-performance gaming and graphics workloads.
The move into handheld gaming represents a strategic shift as demand for portable gaming devices continues to rise. Devices such as gaming handhelds have gained popularity among consumers seeking console-like experiences on the go.
Intel’s entry comes as competition intensifies in the segment. At CES 2026, AMD showcased its latest gaming-focused processor and new graphics technologies, underlining its strong position in both traditional and handheld gaming hardware.

An Intel spokesperson said the company plans to share more details about its handheld gaming products later this year. Industry observers expect further announcements to clarify performance targets, device partnerships and launch timelines.
If successful, Intel’s Panther Lake-based platform could give device makers more choice and increase competition in the handheld gaming market. For gamers, it may translate into more powerful and efficient portable gaming options in the near future.
