Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the sisters of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan ended their sit-in outside Adiala jail late on Tuesday. The protest concluded after assurances were given that a meeting with Imran Khan would be arranged next week.
In a video shared on social media, Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khanum said that the assurance was conveyed by Mahmood Khan Achakzai. Achakzai is the head of the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) opposition alliance and chairman of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party.

Aleema said that Achakzai had advised the protesters to disperse for the day in view of the assurance. She added that the decision was taken to avoid confrontation with authorities, including the possible use of water cannons, which have previously been used to break up similar protests.

Achakzai and Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen leader Allama Raja Nasir visited the protest site earlier in the day. Aleema said their presence strengthened the demonstrators and helped persuade them to temporarily end the sit-in.

However, she warned that the protesters would return if the promised meeting was not allowed. She said the sisters had initially refused to end the sit-in but agreed to do so out of respect for the visiting opposition leaders.

In a separate video, Achakzai described the denial of meetings with Imran Khan as a violation of international norms. He said a station house officer had assured him efforts would be made to facilitate the meeting.
Achakzai called on PTI supporters to gather in large numbers at the next planned protest. He said at least 10,000 people should attend to press for access to Imran Khan and respect for his family.

Earlier in the day, police had used water spray at Factory Naka to stop protesters from advancing. After the area dried, demonstrators resumed their sit-in at the site.
PTI leaders say a list of approved lawyers has already been submitted in line with court orders. Meanwhile, the government has stated that meetings with Imran Khan remain suspended until February 8.
