NDMA sounds alarm as cold grip tightens across northern Pakistan

Published on: January 7, 2026 1:29 AM

The NDMA’s National Emergencies Operations Center (NEOC) has warned of a severe cold wave in northern regions and northern Balochistan, with harsh conditions expected to persist in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Potohar region, and northern Balochistan.

According to the advisory, harsh winter conditions are likely to continue across Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Potohar region, and northern Balochistan in the coming days.

A sharp rise in cold intensity is forecast for northern Balochistan, particularly in Quetta, Ziarat and Kalat.

NEOC have cautioned that the severe weather may heighten the risk of respiratory ailments, urging citizens to adopt precautionary measures.

The NDMA has cautioned that severe cold may damage standing crops, advising farmers to adopt protective measures.

The advisory further warned that prevailing weather conditions, coupled with possible dense fog, could pose risks to commuters in plain areas, urging caution during morning travel.

The Authority said it is ensuring timely early warnings and dissemination of information on potential hazards to relevant institutions and the public.

Dense fog has enveloped Peshawar, severely disrupting daily life and air travel on Tuesday, as visibility dropped to as low as 50 meters.

Like several other parts of the country, Peshawar is experiencing intensified cold weather, resulting in heavy fog across the region.

At Bacha Khan International Airport, flight operations were badly affected, with several flights cancelled and others delayed due to extremely poor visibility.

Airport authorities suspended and delayed flights as a safety precaution, citing critical visibility conditions. Passengers have been advised to stay in contact with airlines for the latest updates on flight schedules.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving, as low visibility continues to pose serious risks on roads throughout the city.

A youth was killed and three others sustained injuries when a vehicle collided with a parked truck due to dense fog on Dalla Road within the limits of Chobara police station, on Tuesday.

According to Rescue 1122, the accident occurred near Nawan Kot on 18-Hazari Road, where poor visibility caused by thick fog resulted in the pickup ramming into a stationary truck standing on the roadside.

As a result, 20-year-old Muhammad Shan died on the spot, while three others were injured. The injured were identified as 35-year-old Sher Muhammad, 45-year-old Malik, and 32-year-old Qasim, all belonging to Jhang district. Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the site and shifted the body and injured to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Chobara.
