In a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s energy sector, significant oil and gas reserves have been discovered in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, raising hopes for improved domestic energy production and reduced reliance on costly imports, the local correspondent of APP reported this from Kohat on Sunday.
According to initial estimates, the exploratory well is expected to produce around 4,100 barrels of oil per day, a development being described by experts as a timely and encouraging addition to the country’s depleting energy resources. The discovery comes at a critical juncture when Pakistan is grappling with persistent energy shortages and mounting import bills.
Energy analysts believe the new find could help ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves, strengthen local energy supplies and generate economic activity in the region, including employment opportunities and infrastructure development. Kohat, they say, has the potential to emerge as an important contributor to the national energy mix.
Officials noted that detailed technical and commercial evaluations will be carried out in the coming days to determine the full production potential and long-term viability of the reserves. These assessments will guide future development plans and integration of the output into the national grid.
The exploration work is being led by Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) in collaboration with its partners, underscoring Pakistan’s resolve to expand indigenous energy resources. The discovery is being viewed as a strategic gain that could play a meaningful role in enhancing energy security and supporting sustainable economic growth amid global market uncertainties.
