Fears of another delay in Islamabad’s local government (LG) elections have risen after the federal cabinet approved a new amendment ordinance.
The Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 was formally ratified, sparking concerns about postponing polls once again. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the cabinet meeting and extended New Year greetings to members.
The ordinance decision follows approvals of other key policy measures, including relief for electricity consumers. The cabinet ratified actions under the Off-Grid Levy Act 2025 to ease power costs. Officials say the move aims to provide financial relief while maintaining energy sector reforms and operational efficiency.

PM Shehbaz also celebrated the successful privatization of 75% of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). He described it as a major step in the government’s economic reform agenda. The premier highlighted that privatizing loss-making public sector entities is vital to long-term fiscal stability and sustainable growth.
The cabinet meeting also touched on Pakistan’s foreign and regional relations. The prime minister said talks with the Saudi Crown Prince and UAE leadership strengthened bilateral economic and strategic ties. He emphasized that strong regional partnerships complement domestic reforms and support overall national development.
