In a statement issued on Tuesday, a PTA spokesperson urged internet users to exercise caution and responsibility while engaging on social media. The authority acknowledged that freedom of expression is a fundamental right, but emphasised that it cannot be used as a cover for unlawful activities.
According to the PTA, content that falls outside the bounds of the law includes material involving desecration of religions, Prophethood or sacred personalities, as well as incitement against individuals or institutions. The authority also highlighted that hateful or false propaganda targeting defence and other national institutions, obscene or immoral material, and the deliberate spread of fake news are offences under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

The regulator warned that individuals found involved in producing, sharing or amplifying such content on social media platforms could face legal consequences. It added that online spaces must not be allowed to become sources of unrest, misinformation or hatred that undermine social harmony and public order.
The PTA appealed to the general public to play a proactive role in curbing illegal online activity by reporting unlawful content in the public interest. Citizens were encouraged to use the PTA’s Complaint Management System (CMS) mobile application to flag content that violates the law.
Separately, the authority reiterated its earlier advisory to telecom consumers regarding SIM ownership. The PTA reminded users that all SIM cards must be registered in the individual’s own name and that using SIMs registered to another person is a violation of telecom regulations.
