Russian and US diplomats held fresh discussions aimed at easing long-standing irritants in their bilateral relationship, yet major political and strategic disagreements remain unresolved, Russian officials said on Tuesday. Moreover, the talks highlighted limited progress, reflecting how deeply strained relations continue to restrict meaningful cooperation between Moscow and Washington despite ongoing diplomatic contact.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the discussions focused on practical obstacles affecting diplomatic work, particularly issues disrupting the normal functioning of each country’s embassies. However, he acknowledged that while some technical concerns were reviewed, the dialogue failed to produce solutions on broader matters shaping the overall relationship.
Meanwhile, Ryabkov said both sides expect another round of similar contacts in early spring 2026, signaling cautious willingness to keep communication channels open. Nevertheless, officials made clear that expectations remain low, as previous engagements have struggled to overcome entrenched mistrust and political tensions.

Importantly, the talks are separate from negotiations related to the Ukraine war, which remain a central source of confrontation between the two powers. As a result, analysts note that without progress on larger geopolitical disputes, efforts to fix diplomatic irritants may bring only limited and temporary relief.
