The United States has approved a $68.6 million military upgrade package for Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets, aiming to extend their service life until 2040 and enhance interoperability with allied forces.
This approval follows legal notifications under the Arms Export Control Act and annual U.S. budget laws, allowing the Defense Security Cooperation Agency to proceed after a 30-day congressional review without objections.
Lockheed Martin, the American aerospace and defence company that manufactures F-16 jets, has been named the prime contractor for the sale, providing long-term design, upgrade, and maintenance support. The package includes hardware, software upgrades, maintenance support, and training systems, ensuring Pakistan’s fleet remains operationally effective for future missions.

The upgrade package features 92 Link 16 tactical data link systems, six non-functional MK-82 500-pound bomb bodies for integration and testing, avionics improvements, secure communications, navigation equipment, and cryptographic devices. Additionally, it includes mission planning tools, reprogramming devices, and essential spare parts to enhance flight safety and operational readiness.
Officials highlighted that the sale supports U.S. foreign policy and national security goals, strengthening Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts and maintaining alignment between U.S. and Pakistani air forces. The transaction does not require additional U.S. personnel in Pakistan and will not affect American military readiness or regional balance.

The F-16 upgrade request was first submitted by Pakistan in 2021, with approvals and notifications issued over several U.S. administrations. Following the completion of required legal and congressional procedures, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency confirmed the sale, emphasizing that it ensures long-term safety and operational effectiveness of Pakistan’s fighter fleet.
