Israel has arrested a Russian citizen accused of spying for Iran, the Shin Bet security agency said on Friday. The suspect allegedly photographed Israeli ports and facilities under Iranian intelligence instructions. He reportedly received payments in digital currency for his activities.
The 30-year-old, Vitaly Zvyagintsev, was detained in early December following secret investigations. Shin Bet and Israel’s Defense Ministry security directorate said he had been in contact with Iranian intelligence since October. Zvyagintsev presented himself as a Russian citizen while carrying out the alleged espionage.
Authorities stated he had been tasked with surveillance across Israel, including photographing strategic locations. His actions reportedly formed part of Iran’s ongoing intelligence operations targeting Israeli infrastructure. The investigation uncovered detailed instructions given to him by Iranian operatives.
Israel and Iran have been engaged in a decades-long covert conflict. This escalated into direct confrontations in June, with Israeli forces targeting Iranian assets inside Iran. Operations often involved Mossad commandos and other intelligence measures.

Shin Bet emphasized that the arrest reflects Israel’s ongoing counterintelligence efforts. Officials said the suspect’s detention prevents further breaches of national security. Authorities continue to investigate any potential collaborators inside the country.
