PA witnesses significant increase in legislation in 2nd parliamentary year

The performance report of the second parliamentary year of the Punjab Assembly has been released.

According to details shared with Daily Times, in the second parliamentary year, a total of 15 sessions of the Punjab Assembly were held, and the sessions lasted for 82 days. Moreover, 62 practical sessions were held, during which 109 draft laws were presented, and 99 bills were passed.

All 58 presented bills in the Punjab Assembly were approved by the house. In these bills, 51 were presented by private members, 41 approved, while 10 bills remained pending.

The pace of legislation in the second parliamentary year was significantly faster than in the first year, with a record number of bills passed in the Punjab Assembly.

The response rate to questions and notices in the Punjab Assembly remained low. A total of 2,399 questions were submitted regarding the performance of government departments, and answers were given to 749 questions from government departments, while the majority of questions remained unanswered.

This year, 222 urgent questions were submitted, all approved, while only 10 were given written answers. Moreover, seven short-notice questions were submitted, four were approved, and only two were answered in the House. Furthermore, 384 calling-attention notices were submitted, of which 266 were passed in the House. Government responses were recorded on 71. The number of zero-hour notices was 508, while 355 zero-hour notices were passed; only 67 were responded to, 93 notices were submitted on important public matters, and government responses were given only in a limited number.

Besides, 54 motions related to privileges were submitted by the members of the assembly, 38 privilege motions were passed, 28 were sent to the relevant committees, 4 privilege motions were disposed of, and 418 adjournment motions were submitted in this second parliamentary year.

The Punjab Assembly passed 191 adjournment motions, 222 adjournment motions were disposed of, 40 are still pending, 270 resolutions were submitted in the Punjab Assembly during the second parliamentary year, and the provincial assembly passed 182 resolutions, while 88 resolutions are awaiting action.

There was a significant increase in legislation, resolutions and motions in the second parliamentary year. According to the Assembly Performance Report, the second parliamentary year was more dynamic.
