Bangladesh is among the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, with troops deployed in volatile regions such as Abyei. The Bangladesh Armed Forces reported that the drone strike was carried out by separatist armed groups on the Kadugli Logistics Base between 3:40 pm and 3:50 pm local time on Saturday.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the attack, offering condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a speedy recovery for the wounded. He emphasized that attacks on UN peacekeepers are unjustifiable and may constitute war crimes, reminding all parties of their obligation to protect UN personnel and civilians.
The Abyei region has long been a source of tension, as Sudan and South Sudan have not reached an agreement on the status of the area following South Sudan’s independence in 2011. The latest attack highlights the continued risks faced by peacekeepers in disputed territories.
