Domestic disputes, divorce cases in Punjab have started increasing at an alarming rate. More than 175,000 divorce certificates were issued in Punjab in one year, report issued by the Local Governments (LGs).
According to the official LGs’ reports on divorce statistics received by the Daily Times, the divorce rate in urban areas is higher than in rural areas. Lahore leads in divorce cases with more than 21,000 certificates issued, followed by more than 14,000 in Faisalabad and more than 11,000 in Sheikhupura.
Moreover, more than 10,000 divorce cases were reported in Rawalpindi, around 8,000 divorce certificates were issued in Gujranwala, Gujarat and Sialkot. An estimated 5,000 cases were reported in Kasur, 4,000 in Sahiwal and more than 4,000 in Okara. Thousands of divorce certificates were also issued in Khanewal, Mandi Bahauddin and Vehari.
There has also been a significant increase in divorce cases in Nankana Sahib and Khushab. Hundreds of divorce cases have also come to light in Chiniot, Bhakkar and Muzaffargarh. The divorce rate has also increased significantly in the rural districts of Punjab.
