Pakistan moves ahead with 5G auction despite legal hurdles

Published on: December 13, 2025 7:15 PM

The government has decided to move forward with the 5G spectrum auction despite ongoing legal disputes over a portion of the spectrum. A total of 194 MHz in the 2600 MHz band will be offered, with 140 MHz under court review. Officials said no stay order has been issued, allowing the auction to proceed as planned.

Informed sources explained that no telecom equipment currently operates on the disputed 140 MHz, reducing technical risks during the auction. Authorities confirmed that the government will ensure the availability and clearance of the spectrum. This decision is seen as a key step to maintain momentum in the country’s delayed 5G rollout.

Industry insiders expect strong participation from major telecom operators, particularly for the high-demand 2600 MHz band. Analysts noted that this band is critical for delivering high-speed mobile broadband and next-generation services across Pakistan. The auction is expected to attract substantial investment in the telecom sector.

Officials emphasized that moving ahead with the auction demonstrates the government’s commitment to advancing 5G technology. They believe that introducing 5G services promptly will boost economic growth and improve digital connectivity nationwide. The government hopes that early adoption will position Pakistan competitively in regional digital infrastructure.

Telecom companies are now preparing bids for the upcoming auction, while legal proceedings continue in parallel. Authorities reassured operators and investors that the auction is secure and compliant with existing regulations. Observers say the outcome will significantly influence Pakistan’s future in next-generation mobile technology.
