Gill and Pandya fit, set to feature in India’s T20 opener

Published on: December 8, 2025 4:39 PM

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has declared top-order batter Shubman Gill and all-rounder Hardik Pandya fit for Tuesday’s T20 series opener against South Africa. Gill recovered from a neck injury sustained during the opening Test, while Pandya returns after a quadriceps injury in September. Both players will strengthen India’s squad for the five-match series.

Pandya’s return adds flexibility to India’s team combinations. Suryakumar said Pandya’s experience, including bowling with the new ball, opens up multiple tactical options for the playing eleven. His presence provides balance to the side and boosts India’s overall performance potential.

With Gill back in the top order, the middle-order slot competition is set between wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma. Suryakumar highlighted the team’s need for flexibility, noting that both Samson and Sharma can adapt to different batting positions.

Suryakumar praised Samson’s versatility, recalling his previous performances opening the innings. He said giving opportunities to both players is an asset, creating healthy competition that strengthens the squad. The team benefits from having multiple players capable of performing varied roles.
