Health ministry warns of smog risks in Islamabad

Published on: December 8, 2025 11:38 AM

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of National Health has issued a public advisory warning residents of Islamabad about rising health risks due to smog during the ongoing dry and cold season. Authorities said smog poses serious threats, particularly to children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

“Particles present in the air during smog can exacerbate respiratory, heart, and eye conditions,” the ministry stated, urging citizens to take precautions to reduce exposure. The advisory recommends minimizing outdoor activities during periods of heavy smog and keeping windows and doors closed at home. Residents are also advised to avoid travelling to highly polluted areas and refrain from burning wood or waste, which can worsen air quality.

Special attention is urged for vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Individuals in these groups are advised to remain indoors whenever possible and wear protective masks if venturing outside. The ministry also highlighted the importance of using clean water to rinse eyes in case of irritation and keeping necessary medications accessible for asthma or respiratory patients.

Other suggested measures include increasing water intake, reducing vehicle usage, and supporting government efforts to improve air quality in the capital. Citizens are advised to stay informed about air quality updates and take necessary precautions during smoggy periods.
