
KARACHI: In a major initiative to provide quality healthcare to underserved patients, the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), in partnership with the provincial government, inaugurated two key facilities on Wednesday — the Syed Haroon Ahmad Dialysis Centre and the Zubeida Mustafa Lithotripsy Unit. The launch took place at SIUT’s trust hospital on Sharea Faisal.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, SIUT founder Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi, and other dignitaries. Speaking at the event, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari praised the collaboration between the Sindh government and SIUT, calling it a source of pride and highlighting Prof Rizvi’s exceptional contributions to the health sector.

He announced plans to expand SIUT facilities to Larkana, Gujar Khan, Sargodha, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ismail Khan. He also noted that government financial support to SIUT has increased from Rs6 billion to Rs21 billion since the 18th Constitutional Amendment, improving access to free healthcare across the province.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah lauded SIUT’s vision, transforming a costly hotel into a trust hospital providing free treatment. He reiterated the government’s commitment of $15 million to the Jinnah Hospital Emergency Tower Project, which is set to become the region’s largest medical complex by 2029, with additional support from Faisal Edhi.

Prof Adib Rizvi emphasized that healthcare is a basic right, and facilities should be accessible to all. The new dialysis centre is equipped with 55 state-of-the-art haemodialysis machines, serving over 200 patients daily, while the lithotripsy unit will perform up to 12 non-invasive kidney stone procedures daily, catering to patients from Sindh and Punjab.
