MARDAN: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday criticised the 27th Amendment, claiming it was passed through a “fake majority” and allowed citizens to change their gender.

Addressing a ceremony at Jamia Islamia, he said Pakistan was founded on Islamic principles to establish justice, but the current situation was contrary. He urged the government to safeguard citizens’ rights and implement a comprehensive system to ensure a prosperous economy.
Mr Rehman alleged that the Constitution had been turned into a “toy,” with powerful groups influencing parliamentary laws to serve their interests, trampling public wishes. He recalled that JUI-F had supported the 26th Amendment last year to promote Islamic banking, empower the Federal Shariat Court, and register religious seminaries, but registration remained pending even after a year.

Criticising the 27th Amendment, he said it included a clause declaring individuals under 18 as minors, which, he claimed, mocked Islamic teachings. He also called laws against child marriage and declaring children of such unions illegitimate as “grave acts against society, law, and Islam.”
He highlighted the country’s economic stagnation and compared it with Bangladesh, whose currency he said had greater value than the Pakistani rupee. Rehman criticised the current government for halting the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’s progress and continuing the practice of granting service extensions to generals.

On foreign policy, he said Pakistan had failed to establish friendly ties with Afghanistan in 78 years. He warned that the nation should avoid conflict, urging a serious review of policies to ensure regional peace.

The JUI-F chief also clarified that he had no personal differences with former prime minister Imran Khan, but opposed his policies. He warned that if needed, JUI-F could launch movements against policies that harm the nation or contravene its principles.
