
The Punjab government is moving to impose broad restrictions on junk and sugary food advertisements, aiming to curb rising heart disease and diet-related illnesses across the province.
Officials said the Punjab Food Authority has consulted leading nutrition experts to finalize a policy framework that addresses both public health concerns and childhood obesity.

Under the proposed reforms, a partial ban on junk food promotions targeting children is under consideration, while strategies to encourage healthier eating choices among the public are being reviewed.
Mandatory food labeling will require manufacturers to clearly display nutritional ingredients on ghee, cooking oils, and all packaged products, ensuring consumers make informed dietary decisions.

The government also plans strict lab testing for all food items, with special checks for milk-based products, while digital platforms may face restrictions on promoting sugar-rich and unhealthy foods.
Additionally, officials propose introducing nutrition as a compulsory subject in schools and strictly enforcing Educational Institute Food Standards Regulations 2017, fostering healthy eating habits among children from an early age.
