Thai border police apologised after publishing an AI-modified image showing flood rescuers in combat gear. The altered photo depicted officers with automatic weapons in southern Thailand’s Hat Yai district. Authorities confirmed that the original image showed unarmed personnel wearing life vests.
The manipulated post caused widespread criticism online, with some netizens condemning the fake image while others joked they wished it were real. Widespread flooding has killed at least 55 people in southern Thailand in recent days. The 437th Border Patrol Police unit originally posted the AI image on Facebook with a joking caption.

AFP fact-checkers identified the AI watermark using Google’s SynthID tool. The original photo was later published, showing rescuers without helmets or firearms, carrying relief supplies in a boat. Police explained that the AI image was meant to demonstrate readiness, not mislead the public.
No disciplinary action has been taken against the unit so far. Authorities reiterated that none of the officers carried firearms during the flood relief efforts. The government’s anti-fake news centre had warned against sharing misleading AI images during crises.

Netizens reacted strongly, urging authorities to communicate responsibly.
