PERTH: The Perth Stadium pitch that witnessed Australia’s dominant eight-wicket Ashes victory over England has been awarded the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) highest rating, Cricket Australia announced on Thursday.

The ICC match referee gave the surface a “very good” rating, reflecting consistent early bounce, good carry, and limited seam movement despite the match ending within two days.

Cricket Australia’s chief of cricket, James Allsopp, said the rating “justifies our belief that Perth Stadium produced a pitch offering a fair balance between bat and ball.” He added that the match’s frenetic pace, amplified by brilliant fast bowling from both sides, contributed to the rapid finish.

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the five-Test series after their pace attack dismantled England twice, setting up a modest chase completed late on day two, bolstered by a match-winning century from Travis Head. Fans holding tickets for days three and four were disappointed by the early finish, though Allsopp praised the memorable moments witnessed during the two days.

Despite the premature conclusion, the rapid finish offered some silver linings. Perth Stadium donated hundreds of kilogrammes of surplus food to local charities, benefiting those in need. Cricket Australia acknowledged the financial loss from missed ticket revenue due to the sell-out on day three but highlighted the positive community impact.

The next Ashes Test will take place at Brisbane’s Gabba stadium starting December 4, with Australia aiming to extend their lead in the series. Officials continue to monitor pitch conditions to ensure fair play and competitive balance throughout the remainder of the Ashes contest.
