UoG students lead the fight against diabetes

Published on: November 26, 2025 11:32 PM

GUJRAT — UoG students lead the fight against diabetes as the University of Gujrat (UoG) marked World Diabetes Day at Hafiz Hayat Campus with a series of awareness activities organized by the Health Care Centre and the Hayatian Biochemistry & Biotechnology Students Society.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Zahoor Ul Haq, recipient of the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, attended as chief guest and inaugurated healthy food stalls and a poster exhibition designed to highlight preventive measures against this chronic disease.

The program, coordinated by Dr Hammad Aslam and Nutritionist Dr Samer Fatima in collaboration with the Students Services Centre, featured a seminar where the vice chancellor emphasized that stress, anxiety, and depression are major contributors to diabetes and urged students to act as social ambassadors by spreading awareness across communities. He stressed the importance of lifestyle changes and daily physical exercise as effective tools for prevention, noting that one in four adults in Pakistan suffers from diabetes, with an estimated 33 million people affected nationwide.

Dr Hammad Aslam explained that the Health Care Centre examines more than one hundred patients daily, focusing on both physical and mental health, while Dr Samer Fatima reinforced the role of exercise and nutritious food in prevention.
Competitions added vibrancy to the event, with “Protein Hub” winning first place in the food stall contest and “Myths vs Facts” securing top honours in the poster exhibition. Souvenirs and certificates were distributed to recognize outstanding contributions.
