ChatGPT voice mode now lets users see responses while talking

Published on: November 26, 2025 3:30 PM

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has updated ChatGPT to make the voice feature more seamless and accessible. Users can now converse with the AI while seeing its responses directly in the chat, eliminating the need to switch to a separate interface.

Previously, users had to navigate to a different screen to use the animated voice mode, represented by a blue circle. That interface included a mute button, a live video recording option, and a button to return to text-based mode. Users could hear responses but could not view them on-screen, which was inconvenient if a reply was missed.

With the new update, ChatGPT’s voice mode is integrated within the main chat screen. Users can speak to the AI and simultaneously see answers appear in real time, including shared visuals such as images or maps. The update allows for a smoother transition between text and voice within the same conversation.

You can now use ChatGPT Voice right inside chat—no separate mode needed.

You can talk, watch answers appear, review earlier messages, and see visuals like images or maps in real time.

The company says the improved voice mode makes interactions more natural, as users can review earlier messages while listening or speaking. Users still need to tap “end” to stop the voice conversation when switching back to text mode.

The updated feature is now the default across web and mobile apps. For those who prefer the previous separate voice mode experience, OpenAI allows reverting to it via “Settings” under the “Voice Mode” section. Here, users can enable “Separate mode” to return to the earlier interface.

OpenAI’s update reflects the growing demand for more natural, conversational interactions with AI. By combining visual and auditory responses, the company aims to make ChatGPT a more intuitive and engaging tool for both casual users and professionals.
