Spinner Simon Harmer took six wickets as South Africa crushed India by 408 runs in the second Test on Wednesday, sweeping the series and handing the hosts a record defeat. The victory marked South Africa’s first series win in India in 25 years, after bowling India out for just 140 in a mammoth chase of 549 on day five in Guwahati.

It was India’s biggest Test loss by runs and their fifth defeat in seven home Tests, following a 3-0 whitewash by New Zealand last year. Harmer, 36, finished with figures of 6-37, helping South Africa claim a Test series in India for only the second time, the first being in 2000 under Hansie Cronje.

India’s batting struggled once again, with Ravindra Jadeja top-scoring with 54 before being dismissed by Harmer. The spinner wrapped up the innings by sending back Mohammed Siraj, while Jansen took a stunning catch in the deep. The hosts never threatened South Africa’s massive first-innings total of 489 after the visitors declared their second innings at 260-5.

Captain Rishabh Pant acknowledged India’s shortcomings, saying the team failed to capitalize on key moments. Early reprieves for Sai Sudharsan and Kuldeep Yadav were quickly undone as Harmer ripped through the top order, dismissing Kuldeep, Dhruv Jurel, and Pant as India slumped to 58-5.
