Karachi residents forced to cook on firewood amid gas loadshedding

Published on: November 25, 2025 4:14 PM

Severe gas loadshedding forces Karachi residents to cook on firewood ahead of winter

KARACHI: Residents of Karachi are resorting to cooking on firewood as severe gas loadshedding hits the city, even before the onset of winter. In areas like PIB Colony, Jahangir Road, Jamshed Quarters, and Martin Quarters, gas shortages have persisted for the past 20 days, disrupting daily life and leaving citizens frustrated.

With household stoves turning cold, people are being forced to rely on firewood or expensive gas cylinders to manage basic cooking needs. Many residents have described the situation as untenable, saying they are struggling to carry out normal household routines in a city that is supposed to be a hub of economic activity.

Protests have erupted in several localities, where citizens raised slogans demanding the restoration of gas supply. Residents shouted, “Provide gas, provide gas,” highlighting their grievances over the ongoing crisis. The shortages come amid simultaneous suspension of other utilities, including water, further compounding hardships.

Local citizens also criticized the government, holding members of the National and Provincial Assemblies, as well as local authorities, responsible for their apparent indifference. “While bills are issued regularly, we haven’t received gas for months,” said one resident, emphasizing the lack of accountability from elected representatives.

The situation has sparked anger and frustration in a city that contributes 70 percent of the national revenue, yet continues to face disruptions in essential services. Residents warned that unless urgent measures are taken, the crisis could worsen further, especially with winter approaching.

The government and gas authorities have not issued a formal statement regarding a timeline for the restoration of supply, leaving residents anxious about the coming weeks.
