Govt engages sectoral councils to boost exports

Published on: November 21, 2025 10:26 AM

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Commerce on Thursday launched a consultative process with sectoral councils for sports goods, gems, and jewellery to identify obstacles to growth and explore strategies to enhance Pakistan’s exports.

Rana Ihsaan Afzal Khan, coordinator to the prime minister on commerce, led the discussions, which focused on strengthening global competitiveness and improving industry standards. In the sports sector, initiatives discussed included skill development programs in collaboration with universities, NAVTTC, and TEVTA, as well as third-party certification to meet international quality benchmarks. Industry representatives highlighted challenges related to the Drawback of Local Taxes and Levies (DLTL) scheme, access to the Export Finance Scheme (EFS), and product quality assurance.

The coordinator emphasised regular monthly reviews to track progress and ensure close coordination between government departments and industry stakeholders. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the sports goods industry through improved training, credible certification, and continuous stakeholder engagement.

In the gems and jewellery sector, discussions centred on strengthening competitiveness, enabling better access to international markets, and promoting value addition and skills development. Mr Afzal encouraged cooperation between the government and private sector to develop a comprehensive export and growth policy, stressing the importance of innovation and market-driven strategies.

The consultative meetings aim to institutionalise collaboration and address sectoral bottlenecks to boost Pakistan’s export performance and contribute to economic growth.
