KOLKATA: India’s batting woes were laid bare on a treacherous Eden Gardens pitch as South Africa secured a commanding victory in the opening Test of the series. The home side were bowled out for 93 while chasing 124, after captain Shubman Gill retired hurt with a neck injury and missed the second innings. South African spinners exploited the sharp turn, claiming 12 of India’s 18 wickets across the match.

Touring skipper Temba Bavuma’s unbeaten 55 was the highest score in the match, highlighting India’s vulnerability against quality spin. Off-spinner Simon Harmer finished with eight wickets in the match and was named player of the match for his outstanding performance. The subcontinent’s renowned turning tracks, which traditionally favour home batters, offered little respite as none of the teams managed a score above 200 in either innings.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir defended the pitch, urging focus on batting technique rather than conditions. “If you are willing to put your head down and have a solid defence, you can definitely score runs,” Gambhir said, pointing to the importance of temperament against spin. KL Rahul’s 39 in the first innings was the top score for India.

With the loss, India slip to fourth place in the World Test Championship standings and face questions over their preparedness for spin ahead of the second and final Test in Guwahati starting November 22. Gill’s fitness remains uncertain, and adjustments in the top order, including the possible return of B Sai Sudharsan, are likely if the skipper is unavailable.
